Blue Hawaii - Agor Edits (free download)

Blue Hawaii is Alex 'Agor' Cowan and Raphaelle Standell and Agor Edits is one of those late year gift releases that catches your attention as a worthy addition to any Top 10 Electronic Releases of 2014 list.  In the spirit of the international touring they've done this year Cowan's made available a series of edits of older material that bridges their recorded and live experiences.
It’s the end of the year, so to commemorate the global underground touring we did— to all the people who were interested in coming to and putting on a Blue Hawaii show in Bangkok or Vilnius— we decided to put together a free mixtape of edits — somewhere between the dreamy record and the banging live show....In 2015, Ra will focus on her other band, BRAIDS, who have just completed a beautiful, deeply emotional, new record which I am very excited to see come into the world. I will use what I’ve learnt this year DJing and roaming the earth to produce more music this winter — planning on releasing material in a similar vein to this mixtape and hitting SXSW this March as DJ Blue Hawaii.. holding down the fort until Ra and I can record another album… something 4 y’all to look forward to! —;) Agor (the boy in Blue Hawaii)

The Barr Brothers - Live @ La Tulipe 04.22.2010 (live download)

photo Scott McGuigan
Back in 2010 The Barr Brothers weren't yet cresting the wave of popularity spurred by their near-perfect sophomore release and relentless touring in support of it.

In venues ranging from concert halls to synagogues and all manner of intimate quasi-improvised settings The Barr Brothers have been bringing this collection of songs right back and forth between those United States and across the pond and back.  The third leg of their exhausting tour wraps up with a string of dates in rural Quebec.

Here's a free live recording of a beautiful performance at La Tulipe in Montreal from March 22, 2010

Killer Mike - Sunday Morning Massacres #1 (download)

Killer Mike is all kinds of reasons to love Hip Hop.  Who else in Hip Hop today could pull off one of the hardest and best Hip Hop albums of the year (Run The Jewels II), speak the truth about Ferguson and drop a bible inspired mixtape in short order.

Sunday Morning Massacres vol. 1 (also known as Ghetto Gospels) speaks to Mike's learnedness and southern upbringing.  This is one of those records you don't want to delete all the 'skits' on.  The skit, which is admittedly the bane of all Hip Hop albums and a faded concept, is here elevated to true street gospel.   On the intro Mike explains that as opposed to East coast and West coast gangsters- Southern G's (gangsters and the god squad) cross paths some times when the pastor sneaks into a juke joint or the gangster goes to church with his grandma on Sunday.  With production by DJ Greg Street this batch of songs actually dates back to 2008 and riding the crest of Run The Jewels popularity, fueled by indignation about racial inequality, Killer Mike undoubtedly thought it was timely to release this material now.

It's a very strong mixtape across the board and with the street sermons that precede every tune it's a necessary primer for street thugs who've lost their way.  His intentions may be a bit mixed.  Jockin' is a pretty standard call-out of Jay-Z  and 'fourth generation Jay-Z biters' - which shows its age with the reference to the song from Jay's 2008 release Blueprint 3Neva/ The Judas Theory evinces Mike's biblical knowledge about Jesus knowing that he would be betrayed and by who.  His advice at the end of the previous skit is straight street though:

"You need to start looking around you and seeing who gonna deny you once you behind bars. Or who ain't gonna stand up under the pressure and might turn you in.  Based on that you need to make different decisions."
It's hard to imagine Killer Mike post-Ferguson recording a track with the same message.  But Caine and Abel is particularly on point talking about the challenges Blacks face trying to run a business together.  One of the most insightful cuts similarly is Samson (Message to Young Black Athletes).  In the sermon that precedes the joint Mike makes the pointed observation that a lot of young Black athletes model themselves after street figures.  "I think morally a lot of them are making the wrong decisions based on the music they listen to rather than the discipline it took to get them where they're going."  The rest of the skit/sermon though switches to the figure of Delilah cast as a modern day athlete chasing bitty who will do what needs to be done to seperate you from your money.

Zeus covers Stone Temple Pilots Vasoline (download)

The Toronto based rock quartet Zeus have defined such a distinctive sound for themselves that even the notion of them performing a cover seems somewhat beyond their fiercely self-produced ethic.  Still what's a band with their own studio, still flogging the deluxe edition of their singular Busting Visions LP, to do between European tours then put out an album of covers (the Covers EP is available April 2 exclusively through GalleryAC.com).

While they've played the Gabriel era Genesis cover That's All as a staple of their live show from their earliest performances this is an engaging development for a fiercely independent band whose influences are as hard to peg as their distinctive sound.

Following the spirited choice to cover Big Star's Ballad of El Goodo as part of a Q107 DisCOVERy series, a number of the new covers leave longtime fans wont for more.  As a teaser to the full release they've posted a downloadable version of their cover of Stone Temple Pilots Vasoline.

Zeus Covers EP tracklist

Who Is It? (Michael Jackson)
Vasoline (Stone Temple Pilots)
The Ballad of El Goodo (Big Star)
Ignition (Remix) (R. Kelly)
That's All (Genesis)
Without a Map (Sam Roberts Band)
Fight Test (Flaming Lips)

Bear In Heaven Fader Mix (download and tourdates)

Jon Philpot
Bear In Heaven are one of the most exciting psychedelic groups to come along in the past decade.  Admittedly it wasn't until I caught their devastating live show at the Ottawa Bluesfest a couple of summers ago, touring in support of Beast Rest Forth Mouth, that I realized that the lead singer was a man.  Listening to the record was vexing and not entirely comfortable.  It was one of those things you picked up because it landed in Pitchfork's top 50 and though you're convinced Pitchfork's utter shit there's probably something interesting going on from 30-50 on their best albums of the year.  Beast Rest Forth Mouth proved a long shot favourite.  In hindsight credit where credit's due they did give the incredibly deserving group their 'Best New Music' award nailing bang on what made the 2010 release so vexing:

"Beast Rest Forth Mouth is as familiar-feeling as it is difficult to pinpoint. Mostly made up of textural, spacious three- to four-minute pop anthems with towering choruses, BRFM is a welcome reminder that an album doesn't have to be bombastic to feel huge and important. Take out the earbuds and let it fill a space: This is music that's bigger than your iPod—music you'll want to feel all around you. Though not quite coming out of nowhere, BRFM seems like a surprise gift—a striking consolidation of the spiky psych-prog tendencies of their debut into a pop framework." [2]

Jon Philpot - Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest July 10, 2010
Seeing the band live I was duly chuffed, at a festival that opened it's first day with an epic performance by Furthur (the post-Grateful Dead vehicle fronted by Phil Lesh and Bob Weir), when leader Jon Philpot emerged wearing a Europe '72 Grateful Dead t-shirt.  Though Bear In Heaven's, who largely hail from Georgia but are thought of as a Brooklyn-based band, brand of psychedelia bears faint if any resemblance to groups like the dead or fellow southerners the Allman Bros. Band.   Their influences are more obviously krautrock and electronic music but their intent is quite consistent with psychedelic values of yore.  Where most psychedelic bands play a lot of notes (often accused of playing far too many) Bear In Heaven weaves dense textural landscapes of sound over which Philpot in his preening falsetto scatters his somehow meaningful but half-heard lyrics.   Bear In Heaven is concerned with the weave of notes back and forth just as much as they are concerned with the wail of sound.  The fabric they fashion is always lush, inviting and somehow questions and prods the listener on into a braver future.

"You lose work, you find work, somebody steals your stuff, you sell some stuff to replace the stolen stuff. In the course of change, a hole is formed and then filled. It could be there for a second or you could stand at the precipice for years. For better or worse, Bear in Heaven is always changing. Some bands don’t change, often out of a desire to keep their listeners. We’re of the mind that we shouldn’t fight nature’s ever-shifting sands. At this point time, the ground is caving in. We’re years away from who we were when Beast Rest Forth Mouth came out and one year away from when we finished I Love You, it’s Cool. This mixtape is the sound of us deciding whether we should start filling the hole or just dive in. It might be fun, we might not hit bottom. We might fly to the other side of this strange dimension. Will you let us do it? Will you join us? We’re playing some shows in October and December. Come see us stand on the edge. In the meantime, enjoy this mix. It’s filled with music by our friends, people we’d like to be friends with and sounds from the road." - Jon Philpot

Kendrick Lamar - The Jig Is Up (Dump'n) prod. J. Cole and Canei Finch

Kendrick Lamar seems to be taking a victory lap banging out a new song apparently overnight with producer J. Cole and Canei Finch.  The track (The Jig Is Up (Dump'n)) has been made available for free download within the last 24 hours.Apparently some 'rapper' named Shyne has been bemoaning the unreserved praise for Lamar's release on his twatter feed.  The lyrical content refers to such as well as the 242,122 units good kid, m.A.A.d city with  sold in the first week landing him at the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 sales chart- putting the Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope talent one spot and a million units behind Taylor Swift.
